Likoni Community Resource Centre
Likoni, across the channel from Mombasa island, is one of the most densely populated parts of the coast — and until now, it has had nowhere built specifically to serve the public as a shared resource. This centre is the first of its kind: a reading room, a meeting hall, and a shaded courtyard open to anyone who needs a place to sit, study, or organise.
The design borrows the coast’s own logic — thick coral-stone walls, deep eaves, and a central courtyard that pulls air through every room — not as decoration, but because a public building that costs nothing to cool is a public building that can stay open. For a community that has waited a long time for something built for it, the intention was simple: make a place that feels permanent, and worth showing up to.
